Event Description

On October 20 to 22, 2017, JOTA will celebrate its 60th Anniversary. JOTA is the largest on-the air gathering of Scouts in the world. Scouters of all ages gather together with fellow Scouts around the world by two-way radio. This year, the Scouts Canada National Museum will be holding an Open House to invite Voyageur Scouters and Youth to come and join us at the Museum to witness and join in the fun. Our Amateur Radio Station, call sign VE3SHQ, will be operating for the whole weekend, under the guidance of our official radio operator and his team.

As some of you may know, our Amateur Radio Station was reactivated this year after almost 25 years, and was first operated at our Museum during Ottawa’s Doors Open weekend in June. We made history again in July when VE3SHQ communicated successfully with the special Amateur Radio Station (VE17JAM) established at CJ 17 in Nova Scotia. Clearly, the year 2017, Canada’s 150th Birthday, has been a very special year for our National Museum.

The Open House venue will be at the rear of the Main Museum Room at Scout Headquarters. Open House hours will be Friday from 8:00 to 10:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. For those interested in Amateur Radio, information will be available about how to qualify for an Amateur Radio license. We invite you to join us, and encourage you to come proudly wearing your Group neckers, and to participate in the fun.
